A great idea, but like many academic ideas, not too practical in the sadly real world we live in…Scandinavian countries do it successfully, but they have intelligent well-designed social programs and a population that is onside..a far cry from N. America. where getting rich and climbing the wealth ladder is tantamount to sainthood, and damn the undeserving poor..
They probably didn’t take into consideration the fact that with every raise of, let’s say, welfare rates here in BC (not anecdotal, the truth) all the (grotty hotels) places that rented to them would raise the rents by the exact amount of the raise given…and seemingly nothing goes up as far as compensation of any kind is concerned without prices for everything going up…
Without price controls on essentials such as shelter and food, without a complete overhaul of the philosophy of private ownership, the result would continue to be that the rich will get still richer..
Look to the States for a classic example of the attempt to level the playing field..Walmart workers make so little money that they are entitled to food stamps (which of course are paid for by taxpayers) so in fact taxpayers are subsidizing Walmart owners by allowing their profit margins to stay the same and instead of forcing the owners to pay a decent living wage, thus are adding to the problem..
When we are educated enough to accept that a level playing field is not only required but desirable, then maybe, but right now all that ‘fair’ income represents is an opportunity for us to be well and truly screwed, yet again, by those who are in the best position to do so, that infamous 1%… who probably paid for the research to get this thing published, to increase their own wealth…wouldn’t surprise me even a little bit…
