WTF McCain?

Years ago, I had a certain grudging respect for John McCain…after all, he had fought his way through  debilitating torture as a POW, seemed to be a bit of what, in Canada, we used to call a Red Tory, and until the last several years, was probably the least offensive of Republicans in the news…

Once he decided to run for US Prez, and took on that she–hag Palin, I was less enthusiastic..

Senator McCain seems to be mentally up and down like a yo-yo, and in the debates with  Obama during the election process, he definitely embarrassed himself – even Obama looked uncomfortable attacking McCain’s ideas, as pathetic as some of them sounded…yet the Senator from Arizona, that bastion of progressive thinking, continued to confound those of us willing to at least cut him some slack by supporting his Veep choice no matter how outrageously she behaved; in fact he still supports her to this day..

But have to give credit where it is due – McCain has come out publicly against the ridiculous attempt to once again control women’s  access to contraception in his own State..so props to you, sir, for this…and the following statement, regarding the Repug Party’s obsessive focus on this issue:

“I think we have to fix that,” he said. “There’s a perception out there because of the way that this whole contraception issue played out … We need to get off of that issue. In my view, I think we ought to respect the right of women to make choices in their lives and make that clear and to get back onto what the American people really care about — jobs and the economy.”

Nice, eh?  And the worst part about it is, he sounds saner and more rational now than he did years ago, and certainly more intelligent and thoughtful than any member of the goon squad running now for the Repug nomination…*sigh*

My political glass is rarely half full these days, but let’s all hope that this is a harbinger of things to come, and that the Tbaggers and so-called ‘Christian’ zealots will somehow see sense and back off.

  1. JJ says:

I always felt the same way about McCain — he was one of the few Rethugs I could actually imagine myself considering voting for (depending, of course, on how fetid my other choices were).

It’s funny; I think McCain’s performance in 2008 was a microcosm of what’s happened to the GOP since then. Moderates pretending to be madmen, for the sake of the votes of a few teabaggers who would despise them no matter how extreme they acted. Mitt Romney is like the 2012 version of McCain: let’s hope Romney doesn’t decide to pander to the looney-toons by selecting another Palin as VP.
